The Guest App Shut Down. Here Are the Best Alternatives in 2026

The Guest was one of the most popular wedding photo apps of its era. It was acquired by The Knot Worldwide, retired in October 2022, and by mid 2024 the archive download service had gone dark too. What happened to The Guest
The Guest required wedding guests to download an app before they could contribute photos, and reporting at the time cited install friction as a core problem: a large share of guests never completed setup. After the acquisition, The Knot wound the product down. The Android app was unpublished in December 2023, and archived album downloads stopped working in June 2024.
Its story is worth two lessons when picking a replacement. First, avoid any app that makes guests install something, because every install you require costs you contributors. Second, ask what happens to your photos if the company behind the app shuts down or gets acquired, because in this category that has happened repeatedly. WedPics, another major name of the same era, was acquired and shut down as well.

The ownership question The Guest made real
Most wedding photo apps in 2026 still work the way The Guest did: photos upload to the company's servers, and your continued access depends on the company's continued existence and your continued payments. Galleries on GuestPix, Kululu, GuestCam, and similar apps expire after 3 to 14 months unless renewed.
The alternative model stores photos in your own cloud from the start. WeddingQR and WedUploader both do this with Google Drive: every guest upload lands in the couple's own account at full resolution. Under that model, a shutdown like The Guest's would be an inconvenience rather than a loss, because the photos were never on the company's servers to begin with.
